Another simile for the internet memes may be writings in public toilets. I don't know if it's still famous in today's culture but the sentence "Bunu yazan tosun, okuyana kosun" was once a pretty big hit. Birthplaces of internet memes are usually referred as toilets, sewers etc. and the biggest difference between them and the public toilets in real life, is their traffic, and reach. Hyperlinking a public toilet door is not that easy, but it is easy in the virtual world.
Internet memes are also self oscillating, and their existance is completely evolutionary. They are not simply icons, but more liek common values for some people. Or like slangs. Here's a video showing some versions of another famous internet meme, the dramatic chipmunk (praire dog)
Even the term meme itself is an evolutionary term, first introduced by Richard Dawkins in his book "The Selfish Gene" This following movie is somewhat educative about origins and causes of the memes:
Lastly, I believe internet memes are also exemplary in primitive human communication, bear similarities with story tellers, and are valid examples in networked narration.
In the hectic world of internet memes, knowyourmeme can keep you up to date about the next big thing in the interwebz.
